When
You
Talk to YOURSELF!
[third]
How often do you find yourself saying things like:
- I need to
- I have to
- I can’t
- BUT
and yet you know the importance of your self-talk don’t you! If we do not replace a bad habit with a good habit, we will, by law, replace it with another bad habit! I have lots of great stories to share with you about this and certainly will do this another time. For now let’s think about what verbiage we can use to replace these phrases with phrases that will serve us!
[third]
Let me ask you this… when you say “I NEED to workout!” or “I HAVE to workout!” How does that feel?
Heavy? Awkward? Uncomfortable? NEGATIVE! Right! Perhaps you are even recalling a time when someone suggested to you that you NEEDED to do something. Perhaps it was your parent or guardian or coach telling you that YOU NEED to clean your room, do your homework or do 50 situps. At any rate there is an emotion connected with that word and in most cases it is a negative emotion. When a person hears YOU NEED TO or YOU HAVE TO do anything there is instant resistance!
So now let’s change the way we look at this to gratitude! Yes GRATITUDE!
Try this on for size…
“I GET TO work out!!”
“I CHOOSE TO workout!”
Do you feel the difference?
Isn’t it:
- Lighter
- More comfortable
- More responsible
- and in gratitude
DO IT NOW!

BUT
The GIANT
PINK
ERASER
Did you ever notice that the use of the word BUT erases or disqualifies everything that precedes it?
“You did a great job cleaning your room BUT you forgot to sweep the floor!”
“You did a great job cleaning up the kitchen BUT you forgot to wipe out the sink!”
“I love you BUT…
“You are a great person BUT…”
“You would be great for the job BUT… John is better!”
I am sure you can add many more examples from your experience and perhaps even from something you said to a spouse or a child!
What happens if you replace the word BUT with the word AND??
That word makes it possible for you to think of another positive instead of a negative!
TRY IT NOW!
You did a great job writing that article AND I am confident it had a huge impact on many people!
